Class Description:
In this watercolour workshop you will have the opportunity to work with renowned local artist, Clive Powsey.

This workshop will explore two aspects of watercolour; glazing with transparent colour and mixing alla prima (wet on wet). You will paint two watercolours over the day. One will explore either a face or still life as a subject matter, which will be painted in a monochrome grisaille paying careful attention to the effect of light and shade on form and ignoring local colour. Subsequently local colour will be glazed onto the painting bringing together the full effect of light and shade, local colour, and texture.

Later in the day a quick, loose watercolour or two will be executed from figure, still life or landscape reference.

As a result of these experiments you will learn about rendering form in paint and will be particularly aware of some of watercolours unique strengths. You will be able to repeat the concepts behind these painting exercises at home using similar subject matter.

Dates:
Feb 3
Saturday 1:00pm – 5:00pm

What is included:
All artist quality supplies are included, but students might want to consider bringing (completely optional):

  • Your own personal set of watercolours, pallet and brushes.
  • Your own preference in watercolour paper.
  • Some image references. I will advise if the reference does not match the exercises and the techniques to be employed.

Bonus: You are welcome to attend a free drop-in to Your Studio during the current session (must use by Feb 7) to complete your piece that was started in this workshop.

Who is this class for:
Designed for beginner to intermediate painters. If you can paint with acrylic or oil but watercolour frustrates you, this course will be helpful. In the study of light and shade on form, watercolour is an ideal medium because you must preserve lights. This fact tends to improve opaque painting. Drawing skills are always helpful, but not mandatory.

What to bring:
We have some aprons, but wear clothes that can withstand the elements (i.e. glue, paint, etc.) of a fun, creative art studio. Nothing else is required but see above “What us included” section for optional items.

Other things you should know:
Please arrive no more than 5 minutes before scheduled start time.
